It’s that time of year again: Champions League! And your boy Duke is here to break it all down and give his favorite UCL DFS plays!!
Welcome back! Another day, another two-game UCL DFS slate. This time, the matches appear to be less one-sided on paper, and we have some pretty high totals to work with. We talked about it on Tuesday in the chat, but it should be stated here, as well. The second leg generally means fireworks. Considering what we saw from the first leg in each of these games, that should mean plenty of goals. Let’s go chasing!
To the desert…
FIRST LEG RECAP
Liverpool won the away leg 2-0 behind goals from Salah and Mane. Statistically, it was a fairly even match with the main differences being the finishing from their stars. Leipzig had their chances but will have to dig out from a massive hole.
Barca folded late and cost themselves a chance at the next round. Keep in mind, the 4-1 shellacking happened in Spain. All four goals were away goals, and Barca needs a similar or better scoreline to have a chance. They simply won’t have the firepower to make it happen with their issues at the back.
UCL DFS GAME THOUGHTS
If someone watched the Champions League and had no idea what was happening in the Premier League, it would look as though it’s business as usual for Liverpool. We know it’s far from business as usual. They do enter this match in a superb spot but poor form. The complete inverse is true for Leipzig. In fact, the outlier is the Liverpool match.
Leipzig won the four games prior to the loss to Liverpool and have since won the four games after! They’ve also kept three clean sheets from the four most recent matches. Leipzig need goals. A 2-0 win gets this game to extra time. Conceding a goal doesn’t drastically change what Leipzig needs to do. It simply means they need three goals. The formation they choose will tell me a lot about how they want to play. They could go with the twin towers of Sorloff and Poulsen. They could go with the target forward in Poulsen and surround him with attacking players. Regardless, this is a team that’s capable of bagging three goals. They’ve scored at least three in six of the last seven matches played in Germany.
Liverpool could potentially get Fabinho back. That would be a massive boost to the back line as ANOTHER center back has come up injured. This time it’s Kabak, the young January signing. As it stands, Fabinho and Phillips are slated to start. The trio of Mane, Salah and Firmino is ready to roll. The midfield three will be interesting. James Milner has played a larger role than anyone expected due to injuries. Alisson has looked shaky.
This is going to be a freaking fascinating contest, and the tie is not over! Anything can happen here.
Neymar is confirmed as out. That isn’t a shock to me. Why risk him at this point when they can basically sleepwalk through this game and advance. It will be interesting to see how Poch plays this one. Realistically, Barca will have a makeshift back line. Pique picked up another injury and will miss this match. Messi and Dembele should be fine, but where else does the attacking presence come from?
All the damage PSG did in the first leg was without Neymar but also without Di Maria, who should return to the first 11. Overall, PSG are essentially a defensive team that attacks with 4-5 players. It’s not a giant wave of attack leaving themselves exposed at the back. Kimpembe and Marquinhos are forming quite the CB pairing.
I do think there will be goals in this game. We should look to target this match.
