Scherzer/Verlander are 1a & 1b. Scherzer SLIGHTLY ahead bc of narrative (vs PHI/Harper).
Snell is chalky, & DC is full fading him.
Concerned about Sale’s health, so avoiding until we can see some more from him.
Like Stroman, great MU (BAL).
Need to see more from Bumgarner. Tough MU & park tonight (@LAD).
DC LOVES Cahill. All-in on him tonight in GPP. SEA is hot, but it’s a great park for Cahill & his price/ownership make him an ideal GPP choice. Tommy isn’t on him bc he likes the SEA stacks.
Tommy’s sneaky choice is Lauer. Good park for a flyball SP, not afraid of ARI.
Can’t fit the HOU stack w/o paying down at BOTH DK SP spots. Since most people are going to play Scherzer/Verlander/Snell, BOS will likely be low-owned.
Going 2 of Cahill/Lauer/Stroman will get you BOS.
BOS is a tremendous choice w/ tons of upside. OAK bullpen is historically bad right now.
Just concerned enough about Sale to make OAK an attractive stack. Tons of power in LU, & can score in bunches.
Position By Position
Players can be played on both sites & in both formats unless otherwise specified. The guys’ favorite plays will be in bold. “Lock-button”-type plays will be in BOLD CAPS. Positions listed are from FD.
Today’s Coaching Sessions
Here are the bullet points from today’s Hitting, Pitching, & Bullpen Coaching sessions that apply specifically to tonight’s slate. Our Coaching Sessions are available to all MLB subs & take place in our MLB Chat Room 3x/day, Monday-Friday! Check the most recent Cash Game Breakdown for times!
Bullpen (Phil Backert)
Phil Backert: Couple notables…Orioles bullpen has thrown 15 innings the last three days. They plan to have a bullpen game on Wednesday and Andrew Cashner (yikes) is starting tonight. Opposing teams are batting .313 against the bullpen as well. We’ll see if there’s an impact later in the week since both teams are off today, but Pirates and Cardinals had to use 14 relievers on Monday
Last night I took Tommy’s comment on playing Hess at low ownership against Tor bats as he said this team is overrated a bit now. Paid off nicely. I’m not comparing Hess to trashner but should we again fade the Tor bats based off their hitting so far, or is trashner/bullpen so bad last night was a one off?
Phil Backert: The Blue Jays bats have let us down all season pretty much and they have been chalky…I would say it depends on ownership bc they are once again in a good spot.
Hitting (Vlad Sedler)
You venturing down the Tor hole tonight?
RotoGut: Yes, venturing down the TOR hole because they are at home and against a subpar pitcher. Playing the %’s. Lots of great SP on this slate.
You on any boston bats today vs fiers?
RotoGut: I am. Damn do they stink right now. He may go 4 IP, that bullpen is good and game is in Oakland so that’s the only concern. Have to get to him early.
RotoGut: There isn’t much to pick on today. Love my boy Keller but he may give it up a little today. If not him, then the bullpen. And I’ll probably wait on Angels until they are back home
RotoGut: Am thinking Sale bounces back today.
What about his velocity dip?
RotoGut: Let’s see I guess. One game sample. Just don’t play him today if you have concerns.
What leads you to believe Sale will bounce back? Yesterday it seemed as though DC thought he may be pitching hurt and land on IL soon.
RotoGut: He didn’t have a proper tune-up in Spring Training. Looked great that one start just before the season. Not saying I’ll use him today but don’t want to assume the worst from one start.
Vargas of the Mets might be sneaky imho last year he pulled a few out of his backside
RotoGut: I’ll have some Vargas myself. In drafts, took him as a 30th rounder just for this start. There are worst #5 starters out there just have to pick his spots.
I felt like my initial build had too many mets so went back and made some pivots…what would you say is around the “right” number of players from one team in cash games? 2? 3?
RotoGut: 2 is fine, 3 may be much for cash. But 3 doable today on this slate.
You like McNeill today Vlad? Seems under the radar vs Urena, no?
RotoGut: Yes, I always like McNeil. He will be this year what Wendle was last year. Cash game viable almost always.
Right now have 2 mets/2 was/2 hou for DK cash
RotoGut: good mix so long as rain not an issue in WAS
I’m just playing devil’s advocate because my A’s stack worked last night lol. That BOS bullpen is sooooo bad, and if Sale is going to be so-so or be on a pitch limit, I’m interested in A’s
RotoGut: I can see a path for A’s. If I were playing 10+ I’d do what I did yesterday and have a Chapman/Canha/Pinder mini-stack
RotoGut: I like HOU/NYM for cash. BOS is volatile. Also like TOR and WAS if it plays. Sneaky is MIN, MIA, SEA
is shelby miller streched out?
RotoGut: Don’t think he is. Worked under 9 IP this spring (SHelby)
Vlad I’m seeing Dee Gordon projected 9th, so not normally a good situation but BvP and also using that new tool had 4 SB against Cahill last year what are your thoughts?
RotoGut: Dee is one of those rare guys you can play out of the 9 hole. Has a green light always, and always low %.
Total K’S for marco gonzales tonight, and runs allowed?
RotoGut: Marco: 3 ER, 4 K
Any games you think will have a high total tonight?
RotoGut: Very low run totals today. HOU and TOR only ones in main slate projected for 5+ runs.
DraftCheat: Definitely in on Stroman tonight
DraftCheat: So yeah pitching tonight. Tons of top end options. If paying up I have it 1. Scherzer, 2. Verlander. Close between those two, Bryce vs. Scherzer gonna be sick
Think they get the Nats game in? Roth has it as Orange
DraftCheat: It doesn’t look bad to me as of now
DraftCheat: Anyway, conclusion on Snell…He’ll probably be fine and a great pitcher this year, but I’ll pass tonight. Not taking Rockies bats or anything
But the matchup is pretty good for him as well right? I know Story and Arenado mash LHP but Rockies are dogshit away from home.
DraftCheat: yeah of course the matchup matters a ton, but I always like to start with the pitcher skills, the matchups are pretty stable
DraftCheat: So…I’m really big on Stroman and Cahill tonight BUT I recognize doing that in cash is pretty risky. So for me when choosing how to allocate funds for a night of MLB DFS… if there are low owned cheap pitchers I like a lot, like Cahill tonight, It makes a lot more sense to focus on GPPs right, getting better bang for your buck. If you are dead set on playing Scherzer/Verlander, then cash games would be the way to go. Scherzer should be awesome here. He’ll be throwing gas from pitch 1 I’m sure, and most of the Phillies best hitters are RHB, cutch segura hoskins Realmuto, only Bryce from left side
What bats do you like?
DraftCheat: I’m really high on the Astros tonight. Shelby is very bad and that bullpen is even worse.
I was looking at pairing freeland and Cahill and stacking stros and Red Sox ..
DraftCheat: yeah i like it
Thoughts on Ryu?
DraftCheat: good option
Which stros you looking at? I may leave off Breg .. he’s not making good contact
DraftCheat: 1-5 Astros basically
DraftCheat: Jays are good plays on paper…but man they’ve been bad, not sure what to do with them
You gonna play any Red Sox DC?
DraftCheat: Yeah Red Sox are good targets tonight. I want a full stack not one offs though, because the back end of the A’s pen is NASTY
DraftCheat: Mets are meh, that park sucks for home runs
Who are you looking at other than stros
DraftCheat: I like the Jays, Red Sox
Lauer tonight? any interest or not going there with Cahill down in that range
DraftCheat: I feel REALLY good about Cahill tonight
With AZ going off last night, any thoughts on Lauer?
DraftCheat: not huge on lauer, much prefer cahiill
You are the Cahill whisperer but damn those Seattle bats are fire to start the year.
DraftCheat: Seattle has faced trash pitching too tho
DraftCheat: Berrios a good option for sure
I know this is a pitching session, but thoughts on stacking LA against Bumgarner? What do you think of Bumgarner in his old man age
DraftCheat: Dodgers a good sneaky stack for sure. I’m on the fence on Bum
