Welcome to the NFL DFS DST Coach, where we identify the best defenses for our DraftKings and FanDuel lineups!
It’s important to note this article is posted mid-week, so injuries and other news can change our reads as we get closer to Sunday.
What’s up y’all?” Every now and then we have a week where a team defense dominates and “breaks” the slate. Thanks to the New England defense, last week was “one of those weeks”. Don’t let that change your process. If you’re new to daily fantasy, you’ll soon realize that defensive production is hard to predict on a week to week basis. Your best option is come up with a process that you follow week in and week out. In the long run you’ll come out on top. Let’s take a look at the team defenses that make this week’s “wish list”. Here’s a list of the “boxes” you’re looking to “check off”:
•facing an opponent with an implied run total less than 18.0 (although points allowed shouldn’t deter you from choosing a team defense)
•facing a team with a bad offensive line (and preferably a poor run game)
•going up against an opposing quarterback that is turnover prone (facing a rookie/inexperienced quarterback also helps)
New England Patriots (NE) $5000 on Fanduel/$3800 on DraftKings:
The Patriots scored a bazillion fantasy points last week. If you’re choosing them based on that, you should probably reevaluate your process for choosing defenses each week. That being said, they are in another great spot this weekend, as they are massive (-21.5) home favorites against the New York Jets who have an implied team total of 11.0 (not a typo). The Jets’ offensive line is ranked 27th, as per Pro Football Focus, and will have Luke Falk behind center. While I wouldn’t expect them to break the slate, New England’s defense could end up paying off their expensive price tag.
Dallas Cowboys (DAL) $5000 on Fanduel/$4300 on DraftKings:
The Cowboys have the luxury of being a defensive unit that gets to face the Dolphins this weekend. As I said last week, picking on the Dolphins will be a common theme this season. If you rostered the Patriots last week, you took home “all the monies”. While rostering Dallas won’t necessarily ensure a game-winning score, they also find themselves massive home favorites (-22.5), while Miami has an implied team total of 12.5 (second lowest on the slate). While the Dolphins have announced a quarterback switch from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Josh Rosen, they still have the league’s worst offensive line, as per Pro Football Focus.
Los Angeles Chargers (LAC) $3800 on Fanduel/$2500 on DraftKings:
The Chargers are -3.0 home favorites and face the Texans who have an implied team total of 22.8. While Houston no longer has the league’s worst offensive line, they still rank within the bottom 10 of the league, as per Pro Football Focus. They surrendered four sacks to the Jaguars last weekend, so look for the Chargers to exploit any weaknesses in the offensive line. One of the more appealing qualities of the Chargers’ defense this weekend is their salary. They are in a good spot and provide relief at a position that is inherently volatile from week to week. Feel free to roster them with confidence.
Green Bay Packers (GB) $4500 on Fanduel/ $3400 on DraftKings:
The Packers are -7.0 home favorites and take on the Broncos who have an implied team total of 18.0. I’m still not quite ready to anoint Green Bay’s defense as the most improved unit of the season, however, they’re making a very strong case. They only came away with one sack last week against Minnesota, however, they made up for it by grabbing two interceptions and recovering two fumbles. They are usually a more formidable unit at home and get to face a Broncos team that is notoriously more vulnerable on the road. Consider them a sneaky GPP unit.
Minnesota Vikings (MIN) $4200 on Fanduel/ $3300 on DraftKings:
The Vikings are -9.0 home favorites and face the Raiders who have an implied team total of 17.3 (third lowest on the slate). Oakland struggled at home against what should have been an easy defensive matchup against Kansas City, so just imagine the level of difficulty they’ll face on the road against Minnesota. The Vikings are another team that is more formidable at home, so don’t forget about their potential upside when rounding out your tournament lineups.
Other defenses worthy of consideration include: Buffalo Bills (BUF), San Francisco 49ers (SF)
