Welcome to the NFL DFS RB Coach, where we identify the best running backs for our lineups on DraftKings, FanDuel and SuperDraft!
This is an early look at the best RB’s available on Sunday’s main slate, provided every Wednesday during the season. It’s important to note this NFL DFS article is posted mid-week, so injuries and other news can change the outlook as we get closer to Sunday.
Derrick Henry – Titans vs. Browns (SD 1.1x, DK $9,200, FD $10,000)
It was a monster first half last week for Henry, which was a by-product of two different things. The Titans offensive line is finally healthy, and the Colts defense was missing several key players. The offensive line is a key component to getting the big guy in space. Tennessee is fourth in run blocking per PFF and third in run offense DVOA. He did get a few more targets last week, which is great, but the price tag has jumped quite a bit this week in a match-up that is just middle-of-the-road. Henry is best left as a GPP option.
Nick Chubb – Browns vs. Titans (SD 1.2x, DK $7,700, FD $8,700)
Kareem Hunt is a nice player, but he is nowhere near the level of ball carrier that Chubb is. He has five straight games over 100 rushing yards if you throw out the one game he was injured. The Titans are 16th in yards per carry allowed, 16th in rushing yards per game allowed and 17th in run defense DVOA. The Browns are first in run blocking per PFF. The increased price tag will leave him as a GPP only play.
Dalvin Cook – Vikings vs. Jaguars (SD 1.0x, DK $9,500, FD $10,500)
The injury last week really screwed things up for Cook, who missed a couple of series and was ignored for a few series when he did return. It is another great match-up for Cook. The Jaguars are 21st in yards per carry allowed, 29th in rushing yards per game allowed and 26th in run defense DVOA. Cook is the best pay up option in Cash and GPP. It will be interesting to see what his ownership is this week after a disappointing week.
D’Andre Swift – Lions vs. Bears (SD 1.4x, DK $6,500, FD $6,800)
You would have to assume Swift will be a full go with the extra time off. With Matt Patricia out of town, there is no reason Swift should not be the main guy. The Bears are falling apart right now, and this match-up is even better if Akiem Hicks remains out. Swift is a Cash and GPP play who becomes an NFL DFS lock button play if Hicks is out.
Miles Sanders – Eagles vs. Packers (SD 1.35x, DK $6,700, FD $7,200)
No idea why he is not getting more touches when Carson Wentz is playing terribly. Sanders only received eight touches last week, which is incredibly stupid. The only hope the Eagles have this week is to keep the ball out of Aaron Rodgers’ hands. We could see Jalen Hurts finally get more playing time, which may help Sanders since Hurts is a running threat. The Packers are 25th in yards per carry allowed and 24th in run defense DVOA. You can never trust him in Cash at this point, but he is a GPP option.
Austin Ekeler – Chargers vs. Patriots (SD 1.3x, DK $7,100, FD $7,000)
We expected Ekeler to be eased back into things last week, but that was wrong. He finished with 25 touches, including 11 catches on 16 targets for 129 total yards. The one negative is Joshua Kelley seems to still be the goal-line back for some unknown reason. The Patriots are 15th in yards per carry allowed, 21st in rushing yards per game allowed, 24th in run defense per PFF and 28th in run defense DVOA. Ekeler is still a Cash and GPP option even without the goal-line carries.
Gio Bernard – Bengals vs. Dolphins (SD 1.7x, DK $5,200, FD $5,800)
With Mixon still out, Bernard continues to be the lead ball carrier. He didn’t get many touches last week, but the match-up was not great vs. the Giants. It gets much better vs. the Dolphins, who are 29th in yards per carry allowed, 25th in rushing yards per game allowed and 25th in run defense DVOA. Bernard is a solid value Cash and GPP play.
Wayne Gallman – Giants vs. Seahawks (SD 1.6x, DK $5,600, FD $6,100)
This is a value play that gets a ton of volume. With Colt McCoy expected to start, the Giants will lean heavily on Gallman, who had 27 touches last week. The match-up is tough against the Seahawks, but hard to ignore a guy who should get over 20 touches and has scored in five straight weeks. Gallman is a borderline Cash play but worth a look in GPP’s.
David Montgomery – Bears vs. Lions (SD 1.4x, DK $5,500, FD $6,200)
It was the first time all season Montgomery went over 100 rushing yards last week with the help of a 57-yard run. It was the best he had looked all season. Mitchell Tribusky is not a good QB, but his running ability does make it easier on the running back. The Lions are 19th in yards per carry, 27th in rushing yards allowed per game, 23rd in run defense DVOA and 23rd in run defense per PFF. The Bears are a bad team, so hard to trust Montgomery in Cash, but worth a look in GPP’s.
Nyheim Hines – Colts vs. Texans (SD 1.55x, DK $5,300, FD $6,400)
This play will be dependent on the status of Jonathan Taylor, who is on the COVID list. The match-up is great for whoever gets the touches. However, the problem is figuring out who will get the carries with this erratic coaching staff. The Texans are 32nd in yards per carry allowed, 31st in rushing yards per game allowed, 27th in run blocking per PFF and 27th in run defense DVOA. If Taylor is out, Hines would be Cash and GPP playable.
