RadThad breaks down tonight’s ten-game NBA DFS slate!!
What’s up my peeps? When you look up the word “chaos” in Webster’s dictionary, one of the definitions you’ll see is “A 10-game main slate on the final day of the NBA regular season”. Okay, things aren’t that drastic, but you get my point. This will likely be one of the craziest slates of the regular season, but it should also be a lot of fun. The NBA playoffs are right around the corner, so this is our last chance to loosen up before things get real. Have some fun today and remember to preserve that hard-earned bankroll of yours until the playoffs get here.
Without going into detail, here’s what we’re looking at today. Cleveland, Orlando, Philadelphia, Houston, Detroit, Sacramento, New Orleans, Chicago, Oklahoma City and Minnesota have nothing to play for, while Brooklyn, Atlanta, Miami, Denver, Portland, Utah, Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee have something to gain if they win.
I know that I usually bring you the GPP rundown on weekends, however, we’ve decided to switch things up a little. I’ll be bringing you my cash game strategy on the weekends in an attempt to help you build on that hard-earned bankroll of yours. As you should know by now, cash game strategy is very different from tournament strategy. In cash games, it’s all about value. Well, it’s not just about value, but you know what I mean. Your cash game roster should be very “fluid” throughout its construction. To paraphrase the immortal Bruce Lee, “It must be like water.”
Late breaking news can, and will, change your cash game core more often than not so the lineups you create right now will likely look very different from the one you submit prior to tip off. I’ll be sure to post any updates to the article as news breaks (including updated cash game core plays). I’ll also notify y’all of any updates via the Twitter machine. In the meantime, here are my cash game thoughts for today’s slate.
Top Stud (over $8K on FD): Giannis Antetokounmpo (followed by Nikola Jokic)
Top Stud (over $8K on DK): Luka Doncic (followed by Giannis Antetokounmpo)
Top Value (under $5K on FD): Thad Young (followed by Dwight Howard)
Top Value (under $5K on DK): Lauri Markkanen (followed by Dwight Howard)
-On FanDuel my most common cash core of players consists of Nickeil Alexander-Walker (NO), Patrick Williams (CHI), Jae’Sean Tate (HOU) and Thad Young (CHI). You can add either Jarrett Allen (CLE) or Bam Adebayo (MIA) as a bonus core play.
-On DraftKings, I’m getting a lot of Alexander-Walker, Young, Lauri Markkanen (CHI) and Dwight Howard (PHI). You can add either Jarrett Allen (CLE) or Bam Adebayo (MIA) as a bonus core play.
– Here are a few things to consider when constructing your cash game and tournament lineups for this slate:
–“How many New Orleans Pelicans players is too many?” Given the list of teams that have nothing to play for today, we could ask this question for each and every one of them. I’ll keep it “simple” and focus on the teams that I’m using today. Lonzo Ball (NO), Brandon Ingram (NO), Steven Adams (NO) and Zion Williamson (NO) are all “out” for Sunday’s finale against the Los Angeles Lakers, while James Johnson (NO) and Wes Iwundu (NO) are considered to be “questionable”. That puts Nickeil Alexander-Walker (NO) and Kira Lewis (NO) high on my cash game wish list. Wenyen Gabriel (NO) also makes the cut on DraftKings at near minimum salary.
–“How many Chicago Bulls players is too many?” Zach Lavine (CHI), Nikola Vucevic (CHI) and Daniel Theis (CHI) are all “out” for Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks, while Tomas Satoransky (CHI) is listed as “questionable”. Satoransky didn’t play in Saturday’s contest against the Brooklyn Nets so I highly doubt that he’ll take the court tonight. Guys like Coby White (CHI), Lauri Markkanen (CHI), Patrick Williams (CHI) and Thad Young (CHI) are firmly in play in both cash games and tournaments.
-“ How many Philadelphia 76ers players is too many?” The 76ers have already clinched the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference. As a result, don’t expect to see Ben Simmons (PHI), Tobias Harris (PHI), Seth Curry (PHI), Danny Green (PHI) or Matisse Thybulle (PHI) take the court tonight. By all reports, Joel Embiid (PHI) is “likely” to play tonight, but that would be downright stupid. Even Shake Milton (PHI) and Furkan Korkmaz (PHI) have injury designations (although they are expected to be available). Taking a risk on someone like Tyrese Maxey (PHI) or Dwight Howard (PHI) could go a long way tonight.
-Choose Luka as your “beefcake” play in cash games. In addition to being projected as one of the highest fantasy producers on tonight’s slate, Luka Doncic (DAL) and his teammates are looking to keep their spot as the #5 seed in the Western Conference playoff picture. I expect Luka to see his full allotment of minutes which means he should have his usual level of fantasy production. You’ll likely have the opportunity to roster more than one stud today, however, Luka is your choice for “consensus beefcake” across all sites.
–Other cash game viable plays that I like today are CJ McCollum (POR), Bam Adebayo (MIA), Jarrett Allen (CLE), Anthony Edwards (MIN) and Dwight Howard (PHI).
–Only 3 of the potential 20 playoff teams have locked in their seeding spot as of today, so this slate should be a good one.
-Spend up at center in tournaments. Like yesterday, many of the value plays on today’s slate will occupy the center slot in cash games on both DraftKings and FanDuel. If you want to construct a unique lineup you should consider paying up at the position. Karl-Anthony Towns (MIN) presents a deal of risk, considering the fact that the Timberwolves have nothing to play for, however, Nikola Jokic (DEN) and his teammates need to win if they want to keep the #3 seed in the Western Conference.
-Who are a couple of my favorite tournament options on this slate? Nikola Jokic (DEN), Tyrese Maxey (PHI), Louis King (SAC) and Trae Young (ATL),who is also cash game viable.
–My favorite “scrubs” on the slate are Louis King (SAC) and Wenyen Gabriel (NO).
-In a nutshell, I’m using a mixture of New Orleans Pelicans and Chicago Bulls value plays, along with Luka Doncic (DAL) to bring my team to “NBA DFS glory” in cash games. That’s my current cash game strategy, but we all know how things tend to change very quickly as we get closer to tip off. You’ll need to stay alert and available in the event that things get weird. (GPP Tip: This tip is pretty self-explanatory. Do the opposite of what I just said. Another viable tournament strategy for this slate is to roll with a balanced lineup. The biggest mistake that I make when going with a “studs and scrubs” approach in tournaments is either using too many of the chalky value plays or using the wrong ones. Sometimes it’s best to let your opponent make the mistakes by avoiding situation entirely.)
