So we are half way through the NBA season. By now you are following all of the teams beat writers on Twitter. You have your player alerts set up on your phone. And in private conversations with your friends, you admit you are waiting on important news before lock, after lock, and all the way up to the late game tip offs. You are sure you can massage your lineup to get an edge, even if it’s going to mess with the build you were so confident in at 5:20PM. If you want to climb down off the ledge for a couple of slates and drive in the slower lane on the autobahn, keep reading…
Low Stress Draftkings Contest Selection
If you are familiar with the DK contests you know there are three major flavors. Classic, TIERS, and Showdown. Many articles tell you to avoid 150 max contests, and this is absolutely true for NBA. If you go there don’t forget to use Elite Fantasy’s projections! While avoiding the 150’s, you also want to avoid sharks. Please review this link and most importantly, the first blip on Enhanced Contest Eligibility. https://www.draftkings.com/player-first. So if you are new to the industry, and can begin to put the contest selection algorithm together, you can see a couple of things clearly at this point. One, try to minimize the news crunch that makes people nuts and two, try to avoid the industry heavies and their 150 lineups.
Does the type of tournament matter?
Well it all depends who you talk to. You will never be fully free of the classic tourneys and all of the excitement of late swaps and pivots. But for now we are full on TIERS! The available players in TIERS are stars (you won’t find a second string PG getting minutes in a player pool). So you can study their matchups and roster accordingly. Usually with star players, the news drops pretty early. You will want to pay attention to:
- Studs on a back to back with a nagging injury
- COVID Protocols
- Expiring contracts
- Personal (yeah at my work we use personal days when we are hung-over) I digress
We are all still pissed about the Curry “not feeling well” scratch back in February, but generally the worst case scenario is you are waiting on news from a player or two. Think of these tournaments as a concentrated version of a particular slate. Salary is not a factor. Your ability to thrive in this environment will depend on your knowledge of the matchups and not spending your day evaluating value plays if that makes sense. If small payouts bore you, you can certainly play higher stakes tiers tourneys. But if you are on the fringe of saying baseball starts up soon, give TIERS a look and listen to our experts on the Livestreams. They wish they could roster four beefcake studs on any given night. Well with Tiers you can. To wrap up those thoughts, if it pisses you off you cannot roster several high end players on a slate and are constantly looking for value, TIERS are for you.
Just a quick glance at any slate and you will find several TIER tournaments. Looking at Friday’s selection we have a couple that stand out. These two variants are highly recommended. Sometimes DK keeps dropping these types of tourneys as earlier ones fill. So if these are filled, look for similar offerings. If you want to move to the $12 and $27 versions you will see more sharks in the water, but hey, if you are using single entries then don’t fret. These guys need 150 lineups to scare us off.
NBA TIERS $6K Hot Shot [3 entry max] – This is the bellwether on DK that fits our criteria. Its 3 dollars to enter and it’s a 3 max so this is a Chipotle free zone. First place receives 10% of the total payout and the top 10 28%. The top prize is $600 and 26% of finishers will pad their bankroll. Min cash is set to 1.67X. The field size is a winnable 2378.
NBA TIERS $1K High Five [Single Entry] – There are several versions of the High Fives. This one is a Tiers with a top prize of $150. First place receives 15% of the total prizes and the top 10 50%. With a small field size of only 237 a top heavy payout structure is to be expected. 23.2% of finishes will grab some greenbacks with Min Cash set to 2X, which we like to see. Just looking at the experiences badges right now, I would say anyone with the Elite Fantasy analysts on their side will have an advantage here!
And just a quick shout out to our man Healy who popped a 2nd in the FD Monster and finished 2nd and 3rd in several of the SE’s last night! Fire!
Good luck tonight…Peace, and as always, stay safe out there.
