Gerritt Cole (HOU)-$12,200 on Fanduel/$12,000 on DraftKings:
If it seems like you’ve seen this movie before it’s because you have. The only difference is yesterday’s starring role went to Verlander, while today is Cole’s turn to shine.
He’s a massive -500 Vegas favorite and gets his turn to face Detroit who has an implied run total of 2.6. Verlander didn’t come away with the win last night, but he pitched pretty well, to say the least.
Cole has a 36.8 K% (15.6 SS%) and the Tigers are ranked 30thin wRC+ versus right-handed pitching. That puts Cole at the top of my SP1 cash game wish list.
Mike Soroka (ATL)-$9300 on Fanduel/$10,000 on DraftKings:
Soroka might not have a sexy strikeout rate (19.7 K%, 10.5 SS%), however, he does have the second sexiest matchup on the slate, as he gets to face Miami (25.1 K%, ranked 29thin wRC+ versus right-handed pitching).
He’s a -280 Vegas favorite and the Marlins have an implied run total of 3.6, so consider that an endorsement to use him as a pivot off of Cole in GPPs.
He just faced this same Marlins team two starts ago and put up 43.0 Fanduel points, if that makes you feel any better. The savings in salary should also help you squeeze in another “beefcake” hitter, if you like.
Kenta Maeda (LAD)– $7800 on Fanduel/$8100 on DraftKings:
Maeda has the second highest strikeout rate on the slate at 26.3 K% (14.2 SS%), so he’ll immediately get my attention. His matchup against Toronto isn’t the best, however, being ranked 18th in wRC+ versus right-handed pitching is nothing to be afraid of.
Maeda is a -245 favorite and the Blue Jays have an implied run total of 3.5, so Vegas isn’t scared. Maeda has lasted more than 4.2 innings only once in his last five outings so it’s not all “peaches and cream”.
That being said, he checks off enough boxes for me to qualify as a viable SP2 in cash games.
Noah Syndergaard (NYM)– $10,000 on Fanduel/$10,300 on DraftKings:
While “Thor” hasn’t put up superhero numbers in the strikeout department this season (23.7 K%, 12.6 SS%), he continues to lay down the hammer from a fantasy perspective (see what I did there?).
Tonight’s matchup against a potentially dangerous Cleveland team won’t be considered a cake walk (21.6 K%, ranked 16th in wRC+ versus right-handed pitching), however, Syndergaard is a -142 Vegas favorite and the Indians have an implied run total of only 3.9.
Did I mention that “the God of thunder” is also projected to be the third highest scoring starting pitcher tonight?
He isn’t cheap, but with guys like Cole on the slate, Syndergaard will be a low owned commodity that can help you win a GPP.
German Marquez (COL)-$8800 on Fanduel/$10,600 on DraftKings:
Perhaps I’ve been spending too much time with @draftcheat, but I’m starting to come around on Marquez. The fact that he’s scored 39.0 or more Fanduel points in five of his last six outings probably has something to do with it. That isn’t bad for a guy that has to pitch at Coors Field.
Tonight Marquez takes his talents to St. Louis where he’s a road underdog (+123) and faces a Cardinals team that has an implied run total of 4.5. I respect Vegas as much as the next guy, however, Marquez does have a 24.6 K% (12.9 SS%) and St. Louis is ranked 25thin wRC+ versus right-handed pitching.
Tonight is one of those nights that I’m going to “go against the grain” and take a shot on Marquez in GPPs.
Max Scherzer (WSH) -$12,000 on Fanduel/$11,400 on DraftKings:
Okay, so what are we supposed to do with “Mad Max” tonight?
On any other slate he would be at the top of my starting pitcher “wish list”, however, he’s being activated from the 10 day IL (back) and faces a Pittsburgh team that is rather stingy when it comes to giving up strikeouts (18.9 K%, ranked 13thin wRC+ versus right-handed pitching).
Scherzer could be on a pitch count tonight, so that takes him out of cash game consideration, however, he does have a 35.3 K% (17.1 SS%) and is as tough as they come. He’ll cost you a pretty penny, but this is probably the lowest level of ownership you’ll get him for the rest of the season.
I’ll pull the trigger and use him in one of my GPP lineups.
Other SP2’s worth considering in cash games and GPPs: Aaron Civale (CLE) on DK ($6200), Miles Mikolas (STL)
