We’ve got an ugly 8-game Monday slate on our hands with some truly horrendous pitching options. Zack Greinke, the best pitcher on the slate and the only talented arm with a strong matchup, might have to be removed from consideration due to weather issues. Eduardo Rodriguez has a tough matchup with the Indians, and beyond him, it gets thin in a hurry. Nevertheless, we’ll break down the best options.
1.Zack Greinke (weather permitting) –
The veteran righty had a rough start to his Astros career last time out, but we should expect him to bounce back tonight in a prime matchup against the White Sox.
The White Sox are rolling out a truly miserable lineup right now with plenty of strikeout potential and low risk of getting blown up, but the issue here, as mentioned above, is the weather. There’s a decent chance this game turns into a complete washout, but as of this writing, it’s difficult to say for sure.
There is definitely going to be rain that moves into the area in the afternoon and the question is whether or not (pardon the pun) it will dry up in time to play ball. I’m slightly more optimistic about it than I was early on in the day, and we’re just going to have to watch the radar here and likely take a risk (or not).
Greinke is far enough ahead of the pack at SP that taking on the risk here may be worth it.
2. Austin Pruitt (DK Only) –
I wouldn’t pull the trigger on FanDuel, but on DraftKings, I’ll be investing in the Rays’ Austin Pruitt. He’ll serve as the “bulk” pitcher for the Rays tonight and I think has a good shot to go 4-5 innings.
He’s a decent pitcher, though nothing special, and I think he’s better than the numbers he’s put up so far this season. The big thing here is the price, $4K, on a slate with brutal pitching options. The matchup is also prime against the Padres who present Pruitt with a lot more strikeout upside than he’d typically have.
Pruitt isn’t going to win you anything on his own, but I think he can get us 10-15 DK points here for minimum price and allow us to get the bats that can carry the day.
3. Jose Suarez –
I think there’s more to Jose Suarez than he’s shown us so far, and on a slate lacking in options, he’s my next favorite pitcher. He’s a fantastic option on FanDuel at $5700 and on DraftKings I still like him at $7900.
The rookie lefty has some talent for sure, though the results have been very rocky so far. A home matchup with the Pirates may be just what the doctor ordered for Suarez, who I think has a good chance to have his best outing of the season tonight.
4. Joey Lucchesi (FD only) –
I can’t pony up the $10K required to put the Padres’ lefty on my roster on DK, but for $7600 on FD, I’m interested. Lucchesi has been pretty damn solid this season, gets to pitch at home against a depleted Rays’ team that will be replacing their DH with a pitcher, and gets a good strikeout matchup as well.
There are some dangerous right-handed bats here, but as long as he can keep the ball in the yard, Lucchesi should get enough strikeouts to make him well worth a roster spot on this slate.
5. Eduardo Rodriguez –
Sometimes when there is a lack of pitching options on a slate we’ve just go to bet on the talent and that’s the case with Eduardo Rodriguez, who rounds out my pitching options for the slate.
Rodriguez has been quite good this year, and so while this is a pretty brutal matchup against the Indians, he’s still capable of throwing a gem against any opponent.
The Indians will be without Yasiel Puig (suspension) which does improve Rodriguez’ prospects a bit, and I do think we’ll see a good amount of run support for him here against a fraudulent Zach Plesac pitching opposite him.
