What’s up, #EliteMafia!? Welcome to “The Early Bird,” where we’ll cover the pitchers, stacks, and one-off players you’ll need to dominate today’s early MLB DFS slates on DraftKings and FanDuel!
Today, this article will focus exclusively on the DraftKings/FanDuel “Early Slate” starting at 3:10 PM EST. There is much for pitching on the small slate, and on FanDuel, you can easily fit Max Scherzer with some value in Coors. I expect a bunch of ownership that way. DraftKings has done a great job making the “better” options higher, and fitting Max will be tough with no really safe cheap SP2.
MLB DFS Pitchers
CASH: Max Scherzer, RHP, Nationals ($10,700 DK / $11,000 FD) – Mad Max is the top pitcher on the small slate. He is a better option on FD with the QS and no punishment for a bad WHIP. He will allow a homer with his flyable rate. However, he is coming off a double-digit K game. Career-wise, Scherzer has a 37% K rate against this Cardinal roster, holding them to an xwOBA of .195.
GPP SP1: Dinelson Lamet, RHP, Padres ($9,500 DK / $9,000 FD) – This is a GPP only play today, with a high upside in strikeouts. Lamet is making his debut off an injury, so you wouldn’t expect him to go very far into this game. However, the strikeout-prone Brewers provide him with a chance to provide plenty of swings and misses.
CASH/GPP SP1: Frankie Montas, RHP, Athletics ($7,600 DK / $8,600 FD) – The Twins-As are coming off a doubleheader, and the day game will feature some decent arms. Montas is coming off two solid outings against the Astros and Tigers. He had 12 Ks and allowed just one earn run. He has a career 30% K rate against the Twins roster.
GPP SP2: Kenta Maeda, RHP, Twins ($7,400 DK / $7,900 FD) – In the same game, Maeda has a similar matchup in a pitcher’s park. He has a .228 xwOBA against this A’s lineup. He is coming off a rough start where he only went 4.1 innings but had 5 Ks. The matchup is one, just like Montas, that should require him to go a bit longer with the bullpens being depleted after the doubleheader.
Other GPP Options:
Jose Urquidy, RHP, Astros ($8,000 DK / $6,400 FD)
Adrian Houser, RHP, Brewers ($8,400 DK / $6,200 FD)
MLB DFS Stacks
- Astros: Coors is going to Coors. The weather is around 30 degrees, but that shouldn’t stop the bats in this game. Vegas total is at 5.73. Bregman, Brantley and Correa are the top bats.
- Angels: Folty is allowing 2.81 HR/9 in three starts this year. Over the last two weeks, Trout, Upton and Ohtani have over a .300 ISO, and Jared Walsh is sitting at .254. All four are in play.
- Rockies: Urquidy should draw some ownership with really the lack of arms on the small slate. A great way to hedge is with the Rox. A two-player stack of McMahon and Blackmon will be the most popular. Tapia should be leading off and makes a great value.
Value plays listed last.
