Bullpen (Phil Backert)
Phil Backert: Here’s my weekly note that targeting the Orioles bullpen is always in play. The unit allowed another six earned runs on Monday night. Their 28 home runs this season is dead last and it’s not even close. They have also logged 105.2 innings which is most in baseball as well.
Phil Backert: The Pirates bullpen imploded on Monday night by allowing nine earned runs. Opponents are batting .306 against the unit over the last week. Left-handed hitters are slugging .609 against the bullpen this season which is second highest in baseball.
Phil Backert: The Brewers bullpen has had to log 28.1 innings over the last week which has led to an ERA of 5.72 and WHIP of 1.59. They are also allowing the third highest hard hit percentage in this span at 48.7 percent. It should be noted though that Jeremy Jeffress has yet to allow a run since returning from the injured list and could be shifted back into a late inning role soon. A healthy Jeffress and Josh Hader at the backend of the bullpen could be a strong combination.
Hitting & Pitching (Benny Ricciardi)
BennyRicciardi: So let me throw out my thoughts on what I like today and what I have seen so far and then I’ll take questions if you guys have any. We have to start with the Washington Nationals, Jeff Hoffman has been getting lit up in the minors and stepping into a solid offense at Coors Field is not the remedy for pitching struggles. I think he gets chased early. Yes the Nationals are uber chalk, but it’s tough to ignore them today. The White Sox and Orioles are also in great spots.
How many is too many in cash on DK tonight? Who do you like from the Nats if you’re playing on FD?
BennyRicciardi: I have three Nationals in cash on DK right now, due more to pricing to be honest. so on FD I love Matt Adams if he gets in, solid price for a Coors game. Eaton and Soto are also guys I like a lot. Then you’d probably be looking at guys like Kendrick or Dozier or Difoe…. These are more just guys that are priced nice enough to fit.
Do you like anything on the Rockies side?
BennyRicciardi: I actually think Corbin is pretty good and could pitch well here, so I’m fading Rockies. With that said, Story and Arenado own LHP, the rest of the lineup just sucks. The Rockies project for a top five run total tonight, you have to take stands places you think are wrong. I trust Corbin enough to not play against him. I’m not saying I’m using Corbin either, although he’s definitely in consideration for me. Story/Arenado though v. LHP are very above average, so that’s where I would go if I do. Mini stacking them.
I’m looking at Sea/LAD
BennyRicciardi: I like what I have seen from Quintana too. Not enough to play him v. Dodgers, but enough to make me worried about them.
What you think about Seattle today?
BennyRicciardi: Not a huge fan of Sea, they project for a bottom 3 run total today and SD not a great place to hit and expect big games
BennyRicciardi: Toronto is interesting, Not a huge Samardzija guy, love Justin Smoak against him Sogard since coming up for Gurriel is producing and cheap.
I love some Sogard/ tellez / drury / Smoak today
BennyRicciardi: yeah, Toronto is one of my sneaky lower owned stacks I want a piece of today. Been scoring runs lately too, Had 10 last game, 7 a few days ago, and much of the lineup is priced cheaply. Good stack to mix in with another one on FD. I like the game being in Toronto too, plus the Giants matchup is not bad either, I just hate that offense so I’d prefer the Toronto side
BennyRicciardi: I love JD Martinez as a one off today, but am not as high on the full Red Sox stack as some others are. Boyd isn’t horrible, but his weakness is fly balls. JD Crushes lefties. .443 woba, .325 ISO since 2016. I’d prefer to look for one offs with HR power here for the Red Sox to a full stack. JD, Mookie, Pearce being the three.
BennyRicciardi: Pitching isn’t great today, totally agree. The guy who grades out best for me is facing the Rockies in Coors, so I’m not feeling safe with that
Do you like weaver or Montas today ?
BennyRicciardi: More on Montas. I don’t hate Weaver though, I have him rated on the short list
Bailey is in the cash game write-up; seems super risky
BennyRicciardi: I’m not on Bailey, but I like the other three. I actually liked the TB bats against Bailey as a sneaky stack, I’ll have to look that over and see what Ted and Mans liked there
BennyRicciardi: if you want a cheap guy on FanDuel, I like Loaisaiga as a GPP play. Wouldn’t do it in cash, but Domingo German start pushed back. Last night was a 14 inning game, could get a weaker lineup from both teams here if they rest a few guys who played the whole marathon more people will be on Stratton, but he’s just not that good, at least not good enough to take him at higher than usual ownership. Plus if you want to load up on the chalk stacks like Washington, Houston, Boston today you cannot also spend on pitching. Although really their is no expensive pitching.
Can you see yourself fading WAS in GPP or are they must play?
BennyRicciardi: I think you can always look to fade super chalk in GPPs. In cash I see no reason not to have 2-4 Nationals. Never been a Hoffman fan anyway and his minor league numbers coming into this are dreadful. Don’t expect him to last long, but do expect him to get lit up. If so, then you probably get the weaker arms in bullpen after him to just eat innings. So it’s a tough chalk team to totally ignore.
BennyRicciardi: Especially with value like Adams, Dozier, Difoe. So you can stack them with those cheaper guys mixed in pretty easily. I also like Astros stack more than individual players from them. Red Sox I’d rather play just JD, Mookie, and / or Pearce over the stack. White Sox are in play. Moncada and Anderson getting pricey though. Love Abreu > Alonso again today. Abreu good in RvR over his career.
Top 3 Pitchers?
BennyRicciardi: Corbin, Montas, Weaver, but I’m not in love with pitching today.
BennyRicciardi: So for me sneaky stacks are Rays and Blue Jays. You can get some cheap bats there for cash or to fill out GPP teams
BennyRicciardi: Bettis has been moved to a relief role and has been used as an opener, so the likely scenario is Bettis starts, pitches an inning or two and gives way to Hoffman for a few innings and then we get some back end of the rotation relievers
BennyRicciardi: White Sox stack is a good one, but the prices on the middle infielders is high. I like putting Abreu and Alonso together on FD in the 1B and Util spots then building around that. Both are cheap and most people play one or the other.
Balt is pretty cheap
BennyRicciardi: Balt is cheap, but I don’t trust that lineup. I prefer Baltimore bats as fillers on lineups where I need a cheap guy, I don’t ever want to throw hard earned cash on an orioles stack.
Do you like Velazquez or the Det bats?
BennyRicciardi: To me this is a bullpen game, I doubt we get five innings of Velasquez. If we do at his price, he’s in play. I don’t love Detroit bats, so I’d be more willing to take him if anything.
I like Goodrum and Greiner has been pretty hot as well.
BennyRicciardi: I don’t hate it but I don’t think either is the best option at the position, and if I do price plays, I’d rather look at guys on like Washington with their injuries, or Baltimore/WhiteSox with better projected totals, to me those are better cheap plays.
Benny what is your play structure per night? How many GPP and how many Cash lineups do you put out
BennyRicciardi: Depends on the site and the sport. For MLB, I’m more of a GPP player, I try to make 3 lineups and stick to the 3 max or single entry stuff and then play some Qs for tickets or stuff like that on DK.
What did you get today from Uber eats
BennyRicciardi: Skirt Steak, with black beans and white rice, side order of plantains and a flan for dessert
