In Week 9 of the NFL season, #EliteMafia member @JoeySlither took down the DK “Milly Maker”, and our own @Jeff_Mans sat down with him on SiriusXM to talk about his big win!
Below is a transcript of that interview. @Jeff_Mans‘ comments are shown in blue. Enjoy!
Joey Slither, how are you my friend?
Amazing, it still hasn’t sunk in yet. I can log into DK and see it in my balance, but it doesn’t feel real yet. I thought, in the back of my mind, that I could do it someday, but the fact I did it…I’m still numb…I still don’t get it yet.
Yeah, I’ve had some good scores myself, but i can only imagine. Talk to us about your start, etc
I’ve basically just been football and baseball, but I started back in the early 90s, when you had to get the newspaper and stats were kept by hand. I’ve had normal wins before in leagues and stuff, but only ever $100 there, maybe $1000. I started DFS right when it began, but I think $1500 is the most I’ve ever won on DK or FD.
When it comes to the milly, I tell people it’s a lost cause, it’s next to impossible, etc. Why did you keep playing it? Was this always the goal?
Luckily, I’ve been blessed to be an “essential worker” throughout the pandemic, so I haven’t had a loss of income or anything. For me, this was just my weekly…I’m not a lottery guy or a casino guy or anything…so this was just the way that I take a shot at changing my life each week, and it’s all thanks to you. I owe you the biggest, most sincere thank you to you and the entire #EliteMafia team. When you guys put out your articles I read them all, digest them, and spend the week thinking about them while I’m putting together ideas for lineups.
How many lineups did you have in the milly?
Uno. Just one. I’m not one of the guys who thinks multiple lineups (in the same contest) will increase my odds, because you can do that and think you have it all figured out who the best guys are in any given week, and then something happens and blows it all up, like Noah Fant getting hurt yesterday. I generally only play GPPs, but it’s usually single-entry ones. I realize your advice is specifically for cash games, but your analysis is so spot on that I use a lot of that info for my GPP lineups.
Thank you for that, I appreciate it, and yes, my analysis is focused more on cash games, although there is some GPP stuff in there, and the reason I recommend them (cash games) to people is that playing primarily cash games allows you to stay “in the game” for longer by winning more often (even if those wins are a bit smaller), and by doing that…the more times you get that “fire” from winning…the longer you stay around the game and stay involved in building lineups, which in turn gives you more chances at hitting that big score (in the few large GPPs you enter alongside your cash games).
Moving to your specific lineup from yesterday’s big win, how did you end up settling on those particular players?
I knew I wanted the build to be centered around Cook and McCaffrey. I felt like few people would be on CMC because he was returning from injury and people are usually unsure of a guy in that situation, and I knew that using Cook and CMC would mean I’d need to save on some salary in a few other spots, which led me to go with Drew Lock at QB because his matchup with ATL was great. I wanted to pair him with someone, and Jeudy wasn’t too expensive, so that’s who I went with. Then, as I went through everything, it got down to, I think, $3100 that I had left for my FLEX spot, and there were a bunch of guys, but none of whom were all that attractive. However, one thing is that Josh Allen isn’t the type of guy who just focuses on one receiver, he really spreads the ball around, so I saw Gabriel Davis there and could afford him, and felt like he has just as much of a chance as any other Buffalo pass-catcher, so I jumped on it. Beggars can’t be choosers.
Yeah, the Cook-CMC-Lock-Jeudy combination was a popular one, as well it should be…I even used it myself in cash games and GPPs, I just didn’t quite have the same other guys as you…but those other guys, Keenan Allen and Terry McLaurin, together with Jeudy were three of the best choices available, and then Jonnu Smith was the TE you settled with along with fitting Gabriel Davis as your FLEX, and the NYG defense was another great play, against Washington, and got you 13 points as well, and that’s what it takes to win the million dollars.
You and I have been talking a bit behind the scenes, you’re a family man, so what are you going to do now…what are you going to spend the money on?
My wife and I were laughing, and we think this is gonna sound so stupid, but one of those Shark automatic floor vacuums, and then a new refrigerator! I also talked to my financial advisor guy this morning, let him know that there was going to be a lot of money coming in, and that we’d have to start thinking about what to do with it. This is definitely life changing money, and we’re definitely going to want to spread it around a little to friends and family, because fortunately we weren’t in a position where we needed it because we’re going to lose our house or anything, we’re comfortable. So this is just the greatest blessing anyone could have.
I strongly believe good things happen to good people, and just that you’re entertaining the thought of spreading it around proves you’re a good guy and I’m really happy to hear that. I know my wife even had that Shark vacuum on her Christmas list, and your financial guy is definitely going to be busy for the next couple of weeks.
(Back to DFS) So how is it going to change? Are you going to start playing higher-entry contests? More contests? What’s the plan?
To be honest, it’s not going to change at all. I usually put $75, maybe $100 out there for a week and might put 7 or 8 lineups into different contests, and I think I’m going to just keep doing that. I realize that what happened yesterday was something special, and I’m not one of those guys who thinks he’s just going to go out there again next week and win another million. The odds say it will never happen again, so I’m just going to enjoy what I did, continue playing exactly like I did, the same amount of money week in week out, but the nice thing is now I won’t have to worry about anything. It’s something that brings life to my Sunday afternoons, and some people may think it’s silly, but I enjoy it, and it has changed my life.
Awesome, man, so happy for you, and the people in the Elite Fantasy chat rooms are loving you, you’re now a legend, so you’ll have to stop by sometime and say hi to them.
Will do, that sounds great, and I do want to take a second here to say thank you to the guys I’ve played against in fantasy for a long time. I learned how to do this from beating up on them, so it’s because of them that I’m here. My brother Paul, John Sittler, Erik Pearson, Mal, Vavz, Dino, Jigzee, Swami, I love you, I’ve played with you guys forever, and this is a great day.
Love it! Real people winning life-changing money. We’re running out of time here, but congratulations to you, again, have a wonderful holidays and all that stuff!
Thanks again, so much, and Epstein didn’t kill himself.
