EPL DFS GAME THOUGHTS
Pickford is out. James should be fine but is a late fitness test. Doucoure is out but has been for a bit. We’ve seen how injuries and game time decisions have changed our decision making process. Luckily, this is the first match, and we’ll know whether James plays or if we really need to consider playing Gylfi.
Everton won the first fixture this season 2-1 behind goals from Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison. Everton had more possession, more shots and in general were the more dangerous team. This was on the back of their previous meeting when Everton won at home 3-1. Who scored? Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison. (and Bernard but who cares about him?) In the fight game, we say styles make fights. That is in play here, as well. Everton and Palace aren’t super different, but Everton is just better at everything. Better personnel. Better manager. Better back 4. The only question mark here is Robin Olsen. I don’t love Pickford, but he isn’t awful. Olsen fits that profile more.
Crystal Palace have settled into their late season who gives a shit mode a little early here. Complacent would be putting it nicely. I honestly thought Maeta would provide more of a spark than he has. Benteke is still leading the line most nights, and the midfield is struggling through some injuries. I agree that Everton are the biggest favorites on the board. The low total in both games indicates how important the first goal will be.
Wolves have a few late fitness tests, but outside of Jimenez, they should have a full complement of players to choose from. They haven’t scored two or more goals since a February 14 win over Southampton. They were held scoreless in their last two, and with no Jimenez, you have to ask where the goals are coming from. Neto has hit a tough spell, and the young gun up top isn’t quite ready for the big time. In steps Willian Jose, but he hasn’t adapted to the Prem as quickly as I’m sure the manager would like. It’s a struggle. There is no other way to put it.
They’re 13th in the table and eight points behind their standing at this point last year. They are safe from relegation and don’t really have a chance to qualify for Europe. Motivation is certainly a question mark here. Last year, as they were pushing for a place in the top 6 and the Europa League, they really stepped their game up. From February 23rd on, they won seven, drew two and lost only three matches. This is a tough spot for them to turn things around.
West Ham are just two points out of fourth place with a game in hand. A win here puts them back in a Champions League position. Ogbanna is out, but they aren’t missing much outside of that. They’ve struggled against the best of the best in the table but have handled everyone else. Everyone else includes Wolves, who they stomped 4-0 in the first meeting this season.
Considering form and the players available, I like West Ham in this spot. Will they win? Not sure. However, of the two teams, they are far more explosive and capable of accumulating DK/FD points.
