What’s up #ELITEMAFIA! It’s a Thursday night, 6-game college football slate on FanDuel and DraftKings, starting at 7:00 p.m. EDT. If this is your first year playing CFB DFS, you’ll notice that rarely do both sites use the same set of games on their slates. That’s the case tonight with Florida Atlantic-UCF on FanDuel and Kent State-Arizona State on DraftKings – this will alter our roster construction at QB and RB, as you’ll soon find out. Let’s look at some options for tonight’s contests.
Justin McMillan (TUL) DK $5700, FD $9000
The chalk QB tonight, McMillan takes the helm as the full-time starter this season. FIU’s defense was horrible in 2018 and Tulane is only a 2-point favorite, making this an ideal matchup in what should be a close game. Tulane’s implied total is close to 30 points tonight.
Jayden Daniels (SMU) DK $5600, FD N/A
A true freshman with dual-threat ability, Daniels’ low price helps give us the cap space to stack up some of the top RB’s today (Daniels is only available on DraftKings). Kent State finished towards the bottom of most defensive categories in 2018 – allowing over 400 yards per game. The loss of Kalil Morris – the team’s top defensive player last season who is currently fighting to make the Baltimore Ravens roster – won’t help.
Desmond Ridder (CIN) DK $7400, FD $9300
Another duel threat – see a pattern? Ridder should be able to take advantage of the matchup against UCLA – this Bruins defense allowed over 400 yards per game last season. Cincinnati is only a 3-point favorite, so I’d expect another close game.
Kellen Mond (Texas A&M) DK $8500, FD $10300
Mond is the highest-priced QB on FanDuel, but his DraftKings salary is more affordable for roster building. A&M is a 30-point-plus favorite, so I’d imagine that he will see no more than three quarters tonight. The opportunity to hit value is there, but his upside is limited with the team looking ahead to Clemson next week.
***Hey, but what about Trevor Lawrence (CLEM) DK $9000, FD $10100, you ask? Well as jealous as I am of the Goldilocks, I am putting him in the same boat as Mond. Can he smash? Yep! But I don’t think, as a 37-point favorite, that Dabo will risk his star if the game goes as planned. I prefer cheaper QBs tonight.***
Michael Warren (CIN) DK $7800, FD $10000
FanDuel is not giving a fuck with their running back prices today. Warren sits just $200 below Clemson’s Travis Etienne on the site, but his salary is much more manageable on DraftKings. Last season, Warren ran for 142 yards and 3 TD’s against UCLA. Tonight – with the game expected to be close and the recent season-ending injury to teammate Charles McClelland – Warren should have 25+ touches, and should come close to matching last year’s numbers.
Eno Benjamin (ASU) DK $8800, FD N/A
With true freshman Jayden Daniels getting his first start under center, there’s really no reason to think Benjamin won’t be leaned on heavily. Benjamin has game-breaking ability and scored at least 13 DK points in every game last season – going for 24+ DK points in nine of those games. Kent State allowed over 200 yards per game on the ground in 2018. Benjamin has a solid floor for cash games.
Travis Etienne (CLEM) DK $9500, FD $10200
Again, the Clemson players are set up for high-scoring games, but they are so expensive – I’m worried about Etienne reaching value at this price. He does score in bunches, and I think his ownership will be lower than expected, so I won’t hold it against you if you do choose to roster him.
Zach Moss (UTAH) DK $7200, FD $9200
Moss is still the lead back at Utah, and what should be a close game against BYU today makes him a great option at this price. New OC Andy Ludwig expects to feed his running back about 25 carries per game. Moss hit pay dirt in all but one game last season – 12 total scores – until an injury ended his season prematurely.
Darius Bradwell (TUL) DK $6200, FD $8600
I think you may want some of the Tulane rushing attack tonight. The focus at the RB spot has turned to Bradwell. Despite sharing carries with two others in 2018, he still ran for 1,100+ yards. FIU’s defense allowed close to 200 yards rushing per game last year.
Greg McRae (UCF) DK N/A, FD $9300
With a new quarterback at UCF, McRae should be used early and often. He broke out last season, scoring at least once in seven straight games to end the season. The lopsided matchup against FAMU could limit his carries, as UCF is a 48-point favorite.
Darnell Mooney (TUL) DK $6700, FD $8600
Mooney will draw a lot of ownership on DraftKings tonight. Those that love to stack QB-WR will pair him with McMahon, and those needing to save on salary will be drawn to his price. He is one of four team captains for Tulane. Even with transfer Jalen McCleskey out there, he should still be the highest-targeted wideout for the Green Wave, after seeing 33% of all throws last season.
Britain Covey (UTA) DK $4400, FD $8100
I am a bit concerned with Covey coming off an injury, but all signs are pointing to him playing in this game. Covey ranked No. 4 in WR targets in the PAC-12 last season, and his price is TOO cheap to pass up on with that type of production.
Austin Maloney (FIU) DK $4800, FD $8200
Someone will need to scoop up the 18% target rate left behind by C.J. Worton – Maloney was third on the team last season with an 11% target rate. With the over/under sitting at 59.5, and it projected to be a close game, QB James Morgan will need to rely on someone – and I am leaning towards Maloney. Maurice Alexander is the other option if you want a bigger stack. He, too, had 11% of team targets in 2018.
Alec Pierce (CIN) DK $3500, FD $5600
Pierce is taking over for Khalil Lewis, who graduated, and is way too cheap to pass up on as a projected starter for the Bearcats. He’s been a stud in offseason practices, and at his price, you can’t overlook the upside.
Brandon Aiyuk (ASU) DK $6500, FD N/A
Aiyuk is a solid pass-catcher that I was introduced to late last season. With N’Keal Harry now catching touchdown passes from Tom Brady, Aiyuk could be in for a big season. He was targeted 27 times in five games to close out
***Justyn Ross and Tee Higgins (CLEM) are in play as stack options if you go the Trevor Lawrence route. If you’re looking for a punt at WR: Diondre Overton is $3.4K on DraftKings and should be in the slot between Ross and Higgins today.***
