IT’S NASCAR TIME! Welcome back Mafia. First event of the year at The Daytona Road Course. This is just an exhibition event known as the Clash. This is a non-points cash event for the drivers to kick off the 2021 season. Drivers who are eligible for this event are as follows: The 2020 Busch Pole Award winners, former Clash race winners, former DAYTONA 500 champions, former Daytona 500 pole winners who competed full-time in 2020, all 16 drivers from the 2019 Playoffs, 2020 NASCAR Cup Series race winners and 2020 NASCAR Cup Series stage winners.
- 2021 Busch Clash
- Daytona Road Course
- Tuesday 2/9/21 7:00 PM
- 3.6 Mile, 14 -turn Road Course
Starting position will be determined randomly by drawing numbers. The format is 35 laps split into two segments. A competition caution will take place on lap 15 to split the segments.
There were 24 drivers that qualified for this years Clash but only 21 will be competing.
Driver List: Almirola, Blaney, Bowman, Buescher, Kurt and Kyle Busch, Byron Custer, DiBenedetto, Austin and Ty Dillon, Elliott, Hamlin, Harvick, Jones, Keselowski, Logano, Newman, Reddick, Stenhouse, Jr, Truex, Jr.
*Please note, this is an exhibition event and not a full field. I recommend not going heavy on this event and waiting until the following week for the first real race, The Daytona 500.
Let me give you guys a better idea of what we are doing here for Nascar. We put out an early article with some track stats and what drivers I will have my eyes on based on some numbers. Things can change once qualifying and practice are over, so then we put out an update with drivers who seem to be fast or have had a good or bad qualifying run. I put out a total of 12 drivers I like and a few who I am off. The guys I am off are typically guys who don’t run that well here and have qualified in a decent position.
I am trying to narrow things down for you. Too much information can just be confusing. If you need more information, you can look at the projections tab and cheat sheet.
Take a look at the scoring to better understand why I do it this way:
Drivers will accumulate points as follows:
- Place Differential = +/- 1 PTs(Where they start vs where they finish….start 20th ,finish 10th = 10pts)
- Fastest Laps = +0.45 PTs
- Laps Led = +0.25 PTs
- Finishing Position Scoring (winner 45pts, 2nd 42pts, 3rd 41, 4th 40, 39,38,37 etc…)
- .1pts for each lap completed.
- Place Differential = +/- .5 PTs(Where they start vs where they finish….start 20th ,finish 10th = 10pts)
- Fastest Laps = +0.5 PTs
- Laps Led = +0.1 PTs
- Finishing Position Scoring (winner 43pts, 2nd 40pts, 3rd 38, 4th 37, 36,35,34 etc…)
Last year was the first race at the Daytona Road Course, so there is no real track history. Some notables from the race last year.
Elliot won. Elliott led 34 laps, Hamlin led 16 laps, Truex, Jr led 10 laps, Grala led 3 laps.
Start/Finish: Elliott 7/1, Buescher 21/5, Jones 20/11, Bowman 27/12.
Anyone can win here this weekend with only 21 drivers competing. I am going to list a few guys I like at each tier. I didn’t write up the drivers, they are listed in how I like them. All the drivers competing in this event run with good teams and could win. Use this first race as an ice breaker and enjoy it. The real season starts with the Daytona 500!!
- Chase Elliott($10,500)
- Martin Truex, Jr ($10,000)
- Denny Hamlin ($9,600)
- Kyle Busch ($8,900)
- Kevin Harvick ($9,200)
- Joey Logano ($8,100)
- Ryan Blaney ($8,600)
- Brad Keselowski ($8,400)
- William Byron ($7,700)
- Chris Buescher ($5,900)
- Erik Jones($7,200)
- Matt DiBenedetto ($6,900)
- Tyler Reddick ($6,300)
- Alex Bowman ($7,900)
*There will not be a cheat sheet this week due to only 21 racers and we have gone over 12 in the article. Above are my favorites this weekend.
*Race Notes: Mafia, I can’t stress enough that the race tonight is a bit of a crap shoot. With a field of only 21 drivers, many have the opportunity to win this thing. I expect things to get hairy at the end and a lot of different things can happen. A multi lineup approach will yield best results.
Good luck and make sure to let us know of any successful cashes!
As usual,. If you have any questions, hit me up on twitter @trmp31.
